What is the latest iOS Version?

The operating system for Apple’s iPhones is called iOS. Initially known as “iPhone OS” for the first three years (2007-2009), the operating system’s name was changed to “iOS” in 2010.

iOS, an exclusive mobile operating system from Apple, debuted in that year. The most recent version of iOS, iOS 17, which is only compatible with iPhones and iPod Touches, keeps developing with new emojis and capabilities like facial recognition.

In 2023, at its yearly Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event, Apple unveiled iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. The most recent version of iOS is iOS 17, as of this writing.

What devices run iOS 17?

The current Apple iPhone models that support iOS 17 are listed below.

iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
iPhone XR, XS, XS Max
iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd ge

Most iPhones, including the iPhone XR/XS/XS Max, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and the most recent iPhone 14 series, are compatible with iOS 17. Some older iPhones might not be able to operate iOS 17 due to the underlying hardware infrastructure.

What’s new in iOS 17?

Apple releases significant security updates, bug fixes, and new features with every iOS update. Subversions also introduce welcome modifications. Continue reading to discover the most recent iOS 17 updates.

Live voicemail and iMessage transcriptions

With iOS 17, Apple now allows live call screening. In case the caller opts to leave a voicemail, you can ignore the call while reading a live text transcription of the conversation. If the call is crucial and you want to answer it, you will know how to do so. Alternatively, you can block that number while listening to the voicemail transcription in real time. Similar to visual voicemail, audio messages in iMessage are also transcribed.

Journal app

The journaling app in iOS 17 is a useful tool for keeping a daily journal. Your iPhone even suggests topics to write about depending on your everyday activities, such as music streams, photos taken, or locations visited.

Faster Siri usage

In iOS 17, you can activate Siri by saying just “Siri” as opposed to the complete “Hey Siri.” This sounds like a nice modification that makes it easier to launch Apple’s voice assistant. It will be interesting to see how often you talk about Siri rather than to Siri when Siri opens up.

Offline Apple Maps

Disconnecting from the internet can be a blast, despite the fact that it may sound like the beginning of a horror film. But if you’re going on a long drive or camping, you might still want to use a GPS.

Apple Maps now allows users to download portions of a map to your phone’s local storage in iOS 17, eliminating the requirement for a mobile data connection when using an iPhone to navigate or find a location.

iMessage check-ins

If you’re anything like me, you frequently read text messages, become sidetracked, and wander off to do everything else (laundry, dishes, Reddit doom scroll, you name it), neglecting to text your worried friends and family in response.

When you reach home, an innovative feature in iOS 17 will automatically check you in and notify your contacts. In this manner, neither you nor they have to worry about receiving the “got home safe” SMS or running into a Criminal Minds episode.

How to update to the latest version of iOS

You should update your software right away if it hasn’t been updated recently or if you’ve never done so. Here’s how to upgrade iOS to the most recent version:

  1. Head to Settings > General > Software Update
  2. Choose Download and Install to obtain the most recent software release for your iOS device.

Since upgrades frequently take up a lot of space, we advise downloading via Wi-Fi.

Additionally, you can activate routine iOS upgrades by:

  1. Navigating to Settings > General > Software Update
  2. Tapping Automatic Updates
  3. Toggling on Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates.

If your Apple iPhone hasn’t updated despite the passage of time, go ahead and do a manual upgrade. iOS auto-updates frequently come many weeks after their initial release, as Apple’s Craig Federighi says.
