Google maps to include 7.5 million Ghanaian addresses. In a statement made by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the lectures titled “ Bawumia Speaks” in November 2020, he said the Government is negotiating with technology giants Google to upload some 7.5 million Ghanaian addresses to their property recognition system in Ghana.
he further went on to stress that, the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUPSA), in collaboration with the municipal and district assemblies, provided street names and house numbers for each unnamed street in Ghana. According to him, the entire process, which is part of the government’s implementation of a tech addressing system, will be completed in 2021.
“We have implemented a digital address system capturing every square inch of land or water in water in Ghana. In the process, we have identified and provided unique addresses. The Government will affix the address plates for every property in Ghana in the next few months and we expect the process to be completed by the middle of 2021. We have also had discussions with google and expect all our 7.5 million addresses to be uploaded into Google maps early in 2021,” he stressed.
This is part of efforts to digitize the Ghanaian economy, as well as the delivery processes of various government services.
In light of this, the Vice-President noted that, among other things, this program would also help to formalize the economy, increase government revenue, eradicate corruption and eventually provide people with public services in a more efficient and convenient manner.
Lets Focus on What is Google Maps and its work?
Google Maps is a Web-based service that provides detailed information about geographical regions and sites around the world. In addition to conventional road maps, Google Maps offers aerial and satellite views of many places. In some cities, Google Maps offers street views comprising photographs taken from their mapping vehicles.
Google Maps offers several services as part of the larger Web application, as follows.
- A route planner offers directions for drivers, bikers, walkers, and users of public transportation who want to take a trip from one specific location to another.
- The Google Maps application program interface (API) makes it possible for Web site administrators to embed Google Maps into a proprietary site such as a real estate guide or community service page.
- Google Maps for Mobile offers a location service for motorists that utilizes the Global Positioning System (GPS) location of the mobile device (if available) along with data from wireless and cellular networks.
- Google Street View enables users to view and navigate through horizontal and vertical panoramic street-level images of various cities around the world.
- Supplemental services offer images of the moon, Mars, and the heavens for hobby astronomers.
GPS satellites circle the Earth twice a day in a precise orbit. Each satellite transmits a unique signal and orbital parameters that allow GPS devices to decode and compute the precise location of the satellite. GPS receivers use this information and trilateration to calculate a user’s exact location. Essentially, the GPS receiver measures the distance to each satellite by the amount of time it takes to receive a transmitted signal.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) a satellite-based navigation system made up of at least 24 satellites. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, with no subscription fees or setup charges.
Also, Dr. Bawumia claimed that all Ghanaians and residents in Ghana were issued national ID cards by the government, a functional address system was introduced for the whole of Ghana, and financial services were given for the unbanked.
The Vice President identified the introduction of mobile money interoperability as part of NPP-led government achievements, shifting the economy away from a cash-based economy to a cash-lite economy by introducing advanced electronic payment systems and digitizing the provision of government services as far as possible to avoid human interference. “I am very happy to note that tremendous progress has been made on all these fronts and Ghana is clearly on its way to becoming of the most digitized economies in Africa”
