According to Apple’s most recent list of discontinued products, obtained by MacRumors, the first-generation Watch is now officially out of date, including the Hermes and $17,000 18-karat gold Watch Edition editions. As a result, the “Series 0” Watch models, which were originally introduced in 2015, are no longer qualified for hardware support and suppliers are unable to order parts.
Apple maintains a “vintage” list in addition to its obsolete list for items it stopped selling more than five years ago but less than seven years ago. The Series 2 Watch is currently included on the public-facing list (which will shortly be updated), hence it will also soon be listed on the obsolete list.
The news could lead to fresh debate about “planned obsolescence.” Apple’s outdated and vintage page states that the corporation is only required to provide parts for products for five years after they have been discontinued (rules in France extend this to seven years for iPhone and Mac computers). Such debate has sparked change in the past; for example, the business was forced to revise its position on device reparability, and a new EU rule compelled Apple to switch its charging/data connector from Lightning to USB-C.
Since its release, the Watch Edition has been a fascinating case. Regular watches can increase in value significantly, partly because they can still keep time even after many years have passed. The Watch Edition, on the other hand, was over $10,000 but would eventually become outdated. This may be the last opportunity to say farewell if you own one (please let us know below) and the battery hasn’t already run out of charge.
