The introduction of Google’s upcoming Pixel devices is less than two months away, and this week, a brief leak on the Google Store revealed the Pixel 8 Pro and what is likely the Pixel Watch 2.
Google had begun utilizing a render of the Pixel 8 Pro on the Google Store’s subscriptions page, as discovered by @android_setting on Twitter (and reposted by Mishaal Rahman). The image’s alt caption explicitly said that it depicted “a person [taking] a call on a Pixel 8 Pro phone in porcelain.”
Although the image has since been removed, we were able to obtain it from Google’s website before it was taken down this morning.
A hypothetical, and, we’d argue, likely, first glimpse at the Pixel Watch 2 is much more intriguing here. Although it’s difficult to be confident in what we’re seeing, there are multiple indications that this is Google’s second wristwatch.
The perspective of the photo may be the cause of the hardware appearing slimmer, the digital crown appearing different, and the side of the watch appearing somewhat different, almost as if there were a border before the glass began. All of those points, though, are a little shaky because it can come down to the accuracy of the shot.
The next feature was a safety function, with a video showing the watch’s “Safety Check.” Users who have that option enabled can set a timer for particular circumstances. When the countdown expires, the user will be prompted to tap the watch screen to indicate if they are fine or whether they wish to call 911. The user’s location is shared with an emergency contact if they don’t answer at all.
A promise of a full 24-hour battery life, which several smartwatches have touted but failed to fulfill, ends the film. The Watch 2 charges 75 minutes for a full battery and 30 minutes for a 50% battery, the same as the original Pixel Watch.
The band, which has a color similar to champagne, is the clearest indication that this is the Pixel Watch 2. The Google “Chalk” active band is now the closest thing to that, but in actual photos, that band tends to lean more toward a purer white tone.
Since we haven’t seen any renders yet, we really can’t say anything with any degree of certainty, but there are several reasons to think that this could be our first look at Pixel Watch 2. It certainly makes sense that Google would place a photo of its new wristwatch next to a photograph of its newest flagship phone, even if there were little other evidence to support it.
As we’ve previously mentioned, the Pixel Watch 2 will include a new chipset that might result in a significantly longer battery life. Tensor G3 and a new temperature sensor are among the updates that will be included in the Pixel 8 Pro.
