In 2024, Samsung has set a goal of selling 20 million of its foldable Galaxy Z smartphones. From the 15 million foldable Galaxy Z devices that Samsung intends to sell this year, it would be a 33% increase. This is a highly challenging goal because there is now fierce rivalry in the foldable market, including in the United States, where the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold are competing for supremacy in the book-style folding market.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 faces competition from devices like the Honour Magic V2, Oppo Find N3, Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, Huawei Mate X5, and others in China and certain European and Asian regions. And those are simply the models that resemble books. The Oppo Find N3 Flip, the Vivo X Flip, the Huawei P50 Pocket, and other devices compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 overseas and the two Motorola Razr variants in the United States.
And despite the opposition, Samsung still faces a formidable challenge. The total number of foldables anticipated to be sold this year equals the 20 million units it wants to sell the following year. Samsung intends to increase sales by making the Galaxy Z Fold 6 smaller, as we mentioned to you yesterday. When closed, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 measures 13.4mm as opposed to the Pixel Fold’s 12.1mm and the OnePlus Open’s 11.7mm.
The primary area of competition this year was the size of the exterior “cover screen.” Samsung, which received harsh criticism for the little cover screen that adorned its Flip foldables, raised the size of the display to 3.4 inches. Only the Motorola Razr+’s Quick View feature, which boasts a 3.5-inch external screen that fills the full rear panel, was larger.
Currently, the Razr+ allows users to basically do anything on the external display that they can do on the internal display. Not all external screens offer the same features.
Currently, it looks like Samsung will be able to sell 10 million Galaxy Z handsets this year, which is 33% fewer than its aim. If so, the South Korean maker will have to cut its projection for foldable sales for the coming year, or else face the onerous task of needing to treble sales to meet the existing projection of 20 million devices in 2024.
